“There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate” - Linda Grayling

Is there anything better than curling up with a good book on a chilly winter's day? If you're nodding along, then it's time to carve out your own peaceful retreat at home. As a busy mum, having a dedicated space for quiet moments isn't just lovely – it's essential for your wellbeing! At least it is for mine!

Finding Your Perfect Spot

First things first: let's find that ideal corner. You don't need a huge space – a quiet nook by a window, that unused dining room corner, or even a landing space could work perfectly.

The key is choosing somewhere that feels a bit removed from the daily hustle and bustle of family life. Somewhere that you're less likely to be bugged is also handy!

Creating Comfort on a Budget

Now for the cosy bits! You don't need to splash out on expensive furniture. Start with what you have:

  • That overlooked armchair gathering dust in the spare room

  • A few plump cushions from around the house

  • A soft throw (bonus points if it's hand-knitted by Gran!)

  • A small side table for your cuppa, or even a window ledge or radiator cover will do!

Lighting Matters

Natural light is brilliant for reading, but we all know British winter days can be rather grey! Layer your lighting with:

  • A well-positioned reading lamp (charity shops often have great options)

  • A few LED candles for ambiance (safer than real ones if you drift off!)

  • A string of warm white fairy lights for extra magic

Clever Storage Solutions

Keep your reading material organised and within arm's reach. Try these simple ideas:

  • Use a pretty basket for current reads

  • Add floating shelves for your favourite books

  • Pop magazine files on the wall for those Sunday supplements you're saving

  • Keep a notebook and pen handy for jotting down thoughts - maybe even use the inspiration and feel-good vibes to take up journalling!

Keeping It Organised

The key to maintaining your peaceful corner is having a simple system:

  • One in, one out rule for books

  • A small box for "to read" items

  • Weekly dust and declutter (5 minutes, tops!)

  • A cosy blanket basket for quick tidying

The Natural Touch

Bring in some natural elements to create a calming atmosphere:

  • Pop a small pot of lavender on the windowsill

  • Add a vase of dried flowers from your garden

  • Place a few smooth pebbles or seashells in a dish (collected from beach walks)

  • Hang dried herbs in small bunches for their gentle scent - rosemary, thyme, lemon balm or lavender work great

Making It Your Own

Try adding some personal touches that make your heart happy:

  • Frame a few favourite family photos

  • Display cards from loved ones

  • Add a small vision board

  • Keep your favourite tea blend in a pretty tin

Simple Seasonal Updates

Keep your nook feeling fresh through the seasons:

  • Switch cushion covers for warmer fabrics

  • Add a thermal curtain for extra cosiness

  • Change dried flowers to match the season

  • Rotate books to reflect your current interests

The Mindful Corner

Remember, this isn't just about creating a pretty space – it's about carving out time for yourself. Even 15 minutes with a book and a cuppa can reset your day. Think of it as your daily dose of calm in the chaos of family life.

Your Reading Nook Toolkit

Creating your reading nook doesn't need to be expensive or time-consuming. It's about making a space that welcomes you to pause, breathe, and enjoy a moment of peace in your busy day. Start small, use what you have, and watch how this little corner becomes your favourite spot in the house.
