Natural Homemade Room Spray: Your Secret Weapon for a Fresher Home
Let's be honest – between juggling work, family, and what feels like a never-ending to-do list, keeping your home smelling fresh can sometimes feel like another task on the pile. But what if I told you there's a simple, natural solution that takes just minutes to create and can transform the atmosphere of your entire home?
Why Ditch the Shop-Bought Air Fresheners?
Commercial sprays are often packed with synthetic chemicals that can be harsh on both your health and the environment. My homemade room spray is a game-changer – natural, cost-effective, and completely customisable to your mood and needs.
Easy-Peasy Homemade Room Spray Recipe

You can just mix water and essential oils if you need a quick spritz, but for something that will last longer and be more efficient here is the recipe I use.
This recipe is for a 250ml bottle.
Ingredients:
a clean spray bottle - ideally glass, and you can reuse one
100ml water - filtered or distilled if possible, but plain old tap water will do
20ml Polysorbate 80
10ml Lemon Essential Oil
10ml Eucalyptus Essential Oil
see the recipes below for further suggestions
Method:
Weigh and measure everything seperately
Mix the Polysorbate and Oils together in a small container that's easy to pour from
Add the Geogard Ultra to the water - in a jug is best - and whisk well until it's fully dissolved
Pour the oil mixture into the water and mix well. It may foam up, this is normal
It can now be bottled! If it's too foamy now, let it rest a few hours then bottle it
What on Earth Are These Hard-to-Pronounce Ingredients & Why Do I Need Them?
It's a perfectly normal question! Let me explain.
Polysorbate 80 - simply put, this stuff makes the oils and water mix properly. As you know, they don't normally pair well! So what this does is make sure your oils will be dispersed throughout the water, rather than sit on top of it (which means you would only spray water until the very end).
This particular emulsifier is golden in colour and has no smell, that's why it's great for room sprays.
Geogard Ultra - this is what will keep your spray from going off. It's a preservative that provides broad spectrum protection against bacteria which grow in water-based creations. Without it, you'll be spraying bacteria around your house!
I've included links above where you can purchase these ingredients from, and a little will go a long way.

Pro Tips from One Busy Mum to Another
Safety First: Always do a patch test. A quick spray on a small, inconspicuous area can prevent any potential skin sensitivities.
Storage Matters: Keep your spray in a cool, dark place to preserve those precious essential oils. It will last a few months like this.
Quick Trick: Store your spray bottle in the fridge for an extra refreshing spritz!
Pet care: Some oils (like cinnamon, citrus, peppermint and lavender) are toxic to pets so be sure to do some research and watch where you spray them.
Final Thoughts
Creating your own room spray isn't just about making your home smell nice – it's about creating a moment of self-care in your busy day. Those two minutes of mixing and spritzing? They're just for you.
Here's to fresher homes and happier spaces. Happy spraying!
